The Van Buren Residence is a 3,000-square-foot brownstone in Brooklyn redesigned from the ground floor up. The brief was to honour the building’s historic bones while creating a contemporary interior that felt genuinely fresh — not a period pastiche, not a wholesale demolition of the past, but a conversation between the two.
Studio RB preserved the original staircase and several original architectural details, framing them within a palette of deep-toned plaster, white oak, and blackened steel. The kitchen and main living areas were opened to form a generous ground-floor plan, while the upper floors were redesigned as a sequence of calm, beautifully detailed rooms. A wood-burning fireplace, large-format stone tile, and custom millwork throughout give the home its character.
