The Significance of Daylight in Home Interiors

Everit Avenue Residence

March 2024

About the Project

Everit is a residential renovation project starting from the exterior up to the complete overhaul of the interior spaces, including the selection of furniture and interior finishes.

The Design Process

We all understand the pivotal role daylight plays in enriching the quality of living spaces and, by extension, the overall quality of life. Beyond its contribution to vitamin D synthesis, daylight brings visual comfort to homes and visually expands spaces. Moreover, it reduces the need for artificial lighting, fosters a seamless connection between indoor and outdoor environments, and promotes a healthy and enjoyable lifestyle.

Reflecting on the Evirit project, a notable observation unfolded. The first striking feature was the hidden, large windows at the front. However, upon stepping into the space, light was not flooding the space as one would think—darkness, tightness, and a noticeable sense of claustrophobia.

The first step involved opening and clearing the exterior to allow daylight to flood the space through those large windows; more details on this will be covered in a separate blog.

Moving to the interior, we recognized the necessity of creating an open environment where daylight could naturally illuminate the area. Our initial objective was to establish a connection between the front and back, ensuring that daylight permeated from both directions. We achieved this by removing the powder room obstructing the entry, opening up certain walls that hindered the view from the front door, and eliminating the partition between the dining room and living room. Only a 360-degree freestanding fireplace remained, and we expanded the opening with glass doors leading to the backyard.

Further, we pushed the second-floor slab backward to enhance the double-height area of the entry and augment the incoming daylight. This change necessitated a significant structural transformation, introducing new steel beams inserted into the floor and connected to the rear of the house with additional steel column support. This allowed for a column-free entry and a cantilevered second-floor slab.
